Sure it has only been the second week of class, but that didn't mean the teachers weren't going to give a lot of work. With just a few classes in, Franny's teacher thought she would announce to the class that their first exam was coming up. Way to freak people out. Talking broke out in the lecture hall. Most people were talking to those sitting next to them, crying out loud how ridiculous it was to think of exams already. Franny was probably one of the few people that wasn't vocal in the outcry. It wasn't because she didn't care or that she felt that it was only fair for the teacher to announce an exam. It was because she had no one to talk to.
That's just fine with her. In fact, she actually preferred it that way. Her entire life, she had never relied on anyone for companionship. Why should she start now? There might be a few people she would talk to or study with, but that's the extent of their relationship. Franny didn't have people that she would consider her best friend. Even her roommate thought of her as a stranger throughout the year. They may have exchanged a total of twenty-three words, and that was it. But, it wasn't as if Franny liked her roommates, so there was no need to try.
And, now, after her history seminar class let out, she headed over to the dining hall for some lunch. The last time she ate was seven this morning before her Chinese class. Now, that class was hard. How was she suppose to memorize all of those characters? And, she still didn't get the hang of the sentence structure. Minoring in Chinese may not have been the smartest thing to do, but it would look good on her transcript. And, people would be impressed with her being able to speak two languages. Besides, it looked like future business would be in China. So, it might actually help if she could speak the language.
The junior put a small mixed green salad on her tray, then headed over for some BLT. This dining hall wasn't really that impressive. But, when you're that hungry, you would eat almost anything. And, the sandwiches weren't that bad, really. How could you go wrong with salad? Franny went over to the end and picked up a bag of chips, a few cookies, and a cup of Pepsi before going to the seating area and finding a clear table for her to sit at.
Since she doesn't sit with people, Franny never found the need to sit at those big round table that fit eight people. She found herself a nice small table for two over in the corner. This would be a good spot. It would be nice and quiet, away from anyone who might recognize her and come over to pretend to have small talk. She hated people like that. Don't pretend to be friends with her when you're really not. She was left alone for a good five minutes and halfway done with her sandwich when someone finally came to annoy her...

Saying that lunch was crap at this cafeteria was an understatement. Okay, well, it really wasn't that bad. If you're downright hungry or you've never heard of heavenly places like say Tacobell. Much to his dismay, Nathan found out that he had no time to go to his dorm, get to his stash of food and actually finding something decent to eat and get back to his next class in time. He had no choice but to visit the University cafeteria. This was one trip he didn't look forward to. Mel had told him that it wasn't that bad. Right. Then why the hell did he get a freaking indigestion the first time he ate there? Exhaling loudly, Nathan made his way towards the dreaded place. It wasn't that bad really if he really asked himself the question and actually answered it truthfully. Fact of the matter was, he was terribly missing his mom's cooking. He had never been away from home for this long and he was seriously feeling a little homesick. His mom made awesome sandwiches. Eyeing the assorted array of food, Nathan finally decided to get a simple cheeseburger with a small side of fries and orange juice. At least he wouldn't go hungry for at least an hour or two. He finally faced the array of chairs and tables that adorned most of the cafeteria ground and frowned slightly when he found that most of the small tables were already occupied. Great. He'd look really lonely in those eight seaters. He let his eyes roam some more and finally spotted one that contained only one occupant. Huh. Wouldn't hurt to try and ask now would it? Pressing his lips, he made a beeline for the table. "Hey, sorry for bothering you but all the two seater tables are taken. I was wondering if I could share with you. If you're not waiting for anyone that is." With that said, Nathan smiled. (OOC - hope you don't mind me replying

((occ: nope, I need someone for Francis to go off on))
With her sandwich held in mid-air, on the way to her mouth, she just glared at this boy. Did he seriously just ask her if he could join her. "No," she said, simply out of her mouth. There was no need to think. Fran just didn't eat with people. She ate alone, which was the way she preferred it, actually. "Find another table. I don't eat with other people."
Then, thinking that was it, she went back to her sandwhich. Francis could be cold from time to time. But, it didn't bother her what people said about her. In fact, she actually loved the fact that people might hate her and think of her as some kind of bitch. It was showing that all this little effort that she was doing was paying off. Who needed friends anyway? They would only leave or disappoint you in the end. That was a hard lesson she had to learn on her own.
Looking around, she did see that the place was pretty packed. He did look like a freshmen, and the school year did just start. He didn't know any better and was going to find out that the world was a big and bitter place. She sighed as she rolled her eyes. She must have been getting weak. "Wait, never mind," she said, moving her tray in closer to her to make room for him. "You can sit here and eat. But, don't expect me to talk to you." Then, she went back to her lunch as if nothing happened. That was the extent of Fran's friendliness.

"No"
Nathan's smile faded. Well that went well... not. He stood there dumbfounded for a second or two.
"Find another table. I don't eat with other people."
Crap. His sisters were right after all. College students can be really unfriendly. Okay, that's not really the term they had used but hey, it was the same thing. At least to him it was. With a nod, Nathan turned around and eyed the eight seater not far from him. Looks like it was hello uber big table for him. He took a step forward but was halted when he heard her stop him. What now? He didn't say anything back did he?
"Wait, never mind. You can sit here and eat. But, don't expect me to talk to you."
He turned around and stood there for a second or two as he seriously contemplated on taking her offer. It wasn't the most friendliest offer in the planet but then again he didn't want to sit all by himself. Pressing his lips, he slowly made his way back to the table and silently sat down. He took a risk at glancing at her and offered her a small smile.
"Thanks."
Awkward didn't even begin to describe what he was feeling at the moment as he started to eat his lunch.

"Whatever," Fran simply stated as she started with her salad. He obviously must be a freshmen or something. This school wasn't big enough to get lost. In fact, most people know everyone in the school. So, it was really easy to form some kind of reputation. It was like high school all over. Most people knew to stay away from Fran. They knew she was a bitch, and she actually didn't mind when people called her that to her face. However, there were always a few people who didn't know better and dare to test her wrath.
But, this guy sitting in front of her must have been a freshmen. She could normally tell by what's on their tray. A cheeseburger, fries, and juice. It seem like normal food that people would get everyday, right? Well, if you had been here long enough, you would realize that they have cheeseburgers almost everyday, and it doesn't take long to realize that it's leftover food. It was either cheeseburgers from last week or the meatballs from last night that they just mashed up to make it into a burger.
Fran shook her head silently as she continued to eat her salad. A student that had been at Hasting would have gotten something a bit more fresh. That would make them less sick. She just kept looking at him, as if he was crazy, but tried her best to ignore him and continued with her own meal. Afterall, it was none of her business and she wanted to eat here in silence. So far, he was doing exactly that, not talking. So, there was no need for her to start talking it up with him.

Nathan silently ate his cheeseburger. He felt like this was taking him forever when in reality, he'd just been sitting there for a total of not more than five minutes. This girl had totally given a whole new meaning to the word awkward. She just moved it into a whole new level. Category even. Nathan was sure that he'd never, ever do this again. If he had to sit by himself in a damn large table, so be it. Being alone beats awkward anytime.
He told himself not to make eye contact. But of course his eyes refused to obey. Even if he didn't want to, he tossed a glance at her direction. She didn't exactly look like she could bite somebody's head off. Apparently, she could. Of course Nathan thanked the heavens that she didn't do it literally. Otherwise, it'd be really, really messy. Not to mention gory. Ugh. Okay, it was official, this girl was bringing out the Stephen King in him.

Fran was pretty sure that he would have gotten up and left by now. But, here he was, still sitting here, eating his lunch as if this wasn't weird at all. Maybe he was too afraid. She finished her salad, and put it to the side and went for her sandwich. "You know, if you feel too weird to sit here or whatever, you could leave," she said. Hopefully, he took that as a hint. Fran wasn't the friendly type. She had no idea why she even allowed him to sit here. What was she trying to accomplish?
"That burger is going to clog your arteries," she blurted out. "The dining hall doesn't exactly make their food for people who planned on living for a long time." At home, she would always eat the fresh organic food. Her step-mother insisted on it. When she came here, it was something she had to get use to and learn to pick the right food for herself.

"You know, if you feel too weird to sit here or whatever, you could leave,"
Nathan paused and looked at her. Him leave? And what? Make her look bad or something? No. Better yet, make him look like he couldn't even handle sitting with her? No way. Besides, it wasn't like it was mortal sin to be sitting there right?
"That burger is going to clog your arteries,"
He finally continued chewing and looked down at his almost half eaten cheeseburger. Nathan shrugged. "It's not like I don't sweat the cholesterol. I work out everyday so I'm thinking one cheeseburger wouldn't hurt."
Well what do you know? They could carry on a conversation after all.

So, it looked like he wasn't going to be leaving the table. Instead, he started talking about working out. Was he trying to brag? Okay, so maybe he wasn't that bad of a looking guy. In fact, he was okay. But, that didn't mean she was going to turn into one of those girls that started acting dumb or whatever so boys could find them attractive. "Whatever," she grumbled and went back to her meal.
Did he expect her to say something like, 'Oh, how much do you lift?' or 'Oh, can I touch your arms?' Those were for the girls that didn't think very highly of themselves. Or else, why would they feel the need to stroke a male's ego?

"Whatever"
And he got shot down again. Nathan creased his brows and actually looked at her. She was the one who said something first right? What was the deal with her anyway? If she was in a bad mood she shouldn't take it out on anyone. Let alone him.
Placing his burger down, Nathan dusted his hands off and made a grab for his juice. He took a few sips and made sure his mouth was empty before he spoke.
"You seriously need to lighten up. If you're having a bad day I'm sorry. But I'm sure it's not my fault so don't take it out on me. You shouldn't have offered on sharing with me if you were half hearted about it. I'm not mad or anything. I'm just curious as to why you keep snapping at me when I've done nothing to you except ask if you could share this table."
